About Our Township
Kingston Township, located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, has a population of 7,096 as per the 2020 census. Established in 1790, it includes the villages of Trucksville and Shavertown and is home to Frances Slocum State Park, a notable site for outdoor recreation and natural beauty. The township is often referred to as “The Gateway to the Back Mountain” due to its proximity to the scenic, mountainous Back Mountain region.
As a Home Rule Municipality, Kingston Township operates under a local governance system and Home Rule Charter, allowing for more tailored management of its community’s needs. Our Home Rule Charter was adopted January 1, 1976.
The township has a total area of 13.9 square miles, of which 13.7 square miles is land and 0.27 square miles, or 1.87%, is water, with approximately 50 miles of roadway.
In December 2024, the Kingston Township Board of Supervisors adopted and approved an official flag, further solidifying the township’s identity and pride in its history and community. The flag represents the township’s unique characteristics, geography and heritage.
